"Child

Parents tend to put a lot of thought into choosing a pediatrician, but a child’s first dentist deserves the same level of consideration! Early visits shape how kids feel about dental care as they grow up. This can affect their habits and their oral health and development. If you’re a parent in Marietta on the hunt for a pediatric dentist, here’s what I’d suggest you look for in your new practice.

Look for a Specialist in Children’s Dentistry

Training matters because kids have unique oral health needs. Many general dentists see them, but pediatric dentists complete an additional two to three years of specialty training after dental school that’s focused entirely on children from infancy through adolescence. For instance, I trained in pediatric dentistry at the University of Michigan before becoming a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Pay Attention to How They Talk to Your Child

A good pediatric dentist speaks to the child, not just the parent. Watch whether the team gets down to your loved one’s level, explains things in simple words, or lets them take a moment. A positive visit matters more than getting everything done at once!

Ask About Anxiety and Special Needs

A few kids are shy, some are scared, and others need extra patience. Tell the office you’re interested in any physical or behavioral challenges your child faces. Don’t forget about past experiences or nervousness. See how they respond, as certain practices may welcome your child, while others may not have the training to handle special needs cases effectively.

Look for Someone Who Watches Growth, Not Just Teeth

Children’s mouths change quickly. In our office, we evaluate each kid’s growth and development every six months. This allows us to make recommendations about orthodontic treatment and offers referrals when appropriate. A good pediatric dentist keeps an eye on what’s coming, not just what’s happening today!

Read the Reviews

One of the best resources for evaluating a practice is other parents. When looking at an office, read the reviews to establish patterns. One- or two-star posts are normal, but if you see several of them spread over months that talk about the same issue, that’s usually a bad sign.

All this is to say that finding the right place to help your child’s oral health thrive requires a lot of thought. Hopefully, I’ve made it just a little easier. That way, your loved one can get the high-quality care they deserve.
