As a parent, you may do your best to ensure your child takes care of their smile. However, they might’ve ended up needing a dental crown, whether from severe decay or damage. While you might know how beneficial they can be for their growing grin, you might be wondering if the process will be painful for them. To help put you at ease, here’s what you need to know and how their pediatric dentist works to make it as easy as possible.

Will My Child Be in Pain Getting a Dental Crown?

In order for a crown to be placed, a small amount of enamel will need to be removed on all sides of the affected tooth. Their provider will use state-of-the-art instruments, but this is the portion that parents are often worried about hurting. Thankfully, your child won’t feel much during it.

Their mouth will be thoroughly numbed with powerful local anesthesia and given dental sedation if they are especially nervous. Many often say they experience pressure, so that’s what your loved one might feel. The restoration will be placed, and they will be able to enjoy their restored smile right after.

How Can I Help My Child Manage Discomfort?

Your child may start to feel sore after their treatment, but this is normal. Thankfully, it should go away over the next couple of days, but you can try to ease any tenderness with these tips:

  • Make sure they brush with a soft-bristle toothbrush to remove bacteria that spell trouble.
  • Have them rinse with warm salt water to reduce inflammation.
  • Help them avoid hard, cold, hot, or sticky foods as they can be uncomfortable to eat.
  • Give them a children’s pain reliever. Just be sure to follow the directions on the bottle for the right dosage.

Should I Call My Child’s Dentist About Any Pain?

With all that said, while some discomfort is expected, there are some instances where it can be a sign they should get checked out by their dentist. If your loved one is complaining that it’s worsening, lingering, showing signs of infection (such as redness or swelling), or they can’t bite or chew with it, then it doesn’t hurt to schedule a visit. That way, their provider can ensure they have the comfortable results they deserve.
